What Do All Those Different Ratings Mean?    
It's easy to feel overwhelmed by the array of efficiency rating abbreviations and acronyms used to describe or explain furnaces and air conditioners! Here's a list that tells you what they all mean.    

Efficiency Ratings
- Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This is a system for rating the efficiency of cooling equipment. It is calculated by dividing the cooling capacity of a continuously operating air conditioner by the electric power input. The higher the SEER, the less your unit will cost to operate.

HSPF - Heating Seasonal Performance Factor. This measurement is similar to SEER, but it measures the efficiency of the heating portion of your heat pump. Like the SEER, HSPF industry minimums have risen in recent years. The current industry minimum is 6.80 HSPF.

Sound Ratings
In recent years, HVAC equipment has not only gotten more energy efficient, it has gotten quieter. Although sound does not affect the efficiency of a unit, it can certainly affect your comfort. If your unit has a low sound level you (and your neighbors) will hardly notice when it is operating.

dB - Decibel. A tem to describe the relative loudness of a sound. Typically, heat pumps and air conditioners are between the sound of a human voice (70 dB) and a blender (88 dB).

SRN - Sound Rating Number. A unit based on ARI tests. Average sound ratings range from 74 to 80 db. The lower the SRN rating, the quieter the unit.

Furnace Ratings
- Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency ratio is the percent of heat produced for every dollar of fuel
consumed. like the miles per gallon on your car, the higher the AFUE rating, the lower your fuel costs.
All furnaces manufactured must meet at least 78% AFUE. if your furnace is 10 to 15 years old, it probably falls well below the current furnace minimum and wastes energy.

So I can just look for a furnace with the highest AFUE rating right?
Not exactly. The efficiency rating is just one factor to consider when looking at new furnaces. Furnaces use electricity to run fans and motors. The amount of electricity used varies greatly, depending on the type of furnace. Be sure to check electricity usage before making a purchase decision.

General Industry Terms
HVAC - Heating, ventilating and air conditioning. This term applies both to the heating and cooling industry and to the products they manufacture.

ARI - Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute. A non-profit, voluntary organization comprised of HVAC manufacturers. ARI publishes standards for testing and rating heat pumps and air conditioners and ensures a level of quality within the industry.

DOE - The Department of Energy. This is the federal agency that sets the HVAC industry efficiency standards.

BTU - British Thermal Unit. This is the amount of heat that will raise or lower the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.

Btuh - British Thermal Units per Hour. A measure of heat transfer rate.

 Ton - A ton is 12,000 btus. A typical single family residence uses air conditioning or heat pumps ranging between two and five tons of capacity.

Watt (W). A unit of electrical power.

Kilowatt (kW). One thousand watts.

Kwh - Kilowatt hour. A unit of electrical energy equal to the work done by one kilowatt acting for one hour.  top
What can you tell me about air conditioning refrigerants?    
Refrigerants are what make air conditioning possible. Contained within the coils of an air conditioning system, these agents make is possible to cool and dehumidify indoor air. Today there are several types of refrigerants used in air-conditioning systems. The most common is R22, which will be phased out over the coming years in response to international environmental concerns. Though the transition away from R22 is just beginning, Lennox is one step ahead with a full line of products that use a more responsible, chlorine-free refrigerant.

R22. Current Standard.
Acting in accordance with an international treaty called the Montreal Protocol, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has mandated the eventual phase-out of R22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2010, the manufacturing of heating and cooling equipment using R22 will be prohibited, and by 2020 the production of R22 itself must cease.

The main reason for this regulatory action is that R22 is a hydro chlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) compound, which contains ozone-depleting chlorine.

  R410A. The Refrigerant of the Future.
Many of Lennox' newest air conditioners use the EPA-recognized, chlorine-free R410A refrigerant. Because R410A contains no chlorine, it's ozone responsible. R410A is better suited for use in higher-efficiency equipment because you get a higher heat transfer rate than with R22.  R410A allows Lennox, as a manufacturer, to design and make units that are more efficient than ever, like the XC21, the world's first 20+ SEER air conditioner. Choosing an air conditioner or heat pump with R410A not only makes sense environmentally - it may also reward you with energy cost savings.

What is it?

Ozone is a form of oxygen, and can be both good and bad. It occurs naturally in the Earth’s upper

atmosphere – 10 to 30 miles above the Earth’s surface – and helps block the sun’s harmful ultraviolet

rays. At lower levels of the atmosphere – the air humans breathe – it’s a product of pollution, commonly known as smog.


How is it produced?

While ozone in the upper atmosphere occurs naturally,

ground-level ozone is man-made. Many electronic air cleaners and ionizers have been found to produce ozone.









How is it harmful?

According to the American Lung Association, ozone exposure may lead to shortness of breath, chest pain when inhaling deeply, and wheezing and coughing.



Who is at risk?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates one out of every three people in the United

States is at a higher risk of experiencing problems from

ground-level ozone.  top
