Is a Central Humidifier Right For Me?

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers recommends that your home maintain a humidity level between 30-60%.  During extremely cold weather, your home loses humidity to the outdoors and may drop to as low as 10% without a humidification system. Humidifiers help to keep comfortable levels of moisture in the air, which is essential for your health, home and comfort.

Health & Home Concerns: Improper moisture levels can cause dryness in the membranes in the nose, throat and bronchial tubes. Respiratory infections, repeated attacks of winter colds and airborne infections can all stem from inadequate humidity.

Dry air causes static electricity shocks that we all experience during the winter.  It is not a myth that some people lose the hard drive on their computers from static charge.  Humidifiers reduce the likelihood of that happening. Household plants can also suffer from “winter drought” caused by low humidity levels

Lower Heating Bills: Studies show that at 70º F, for every 10% you increase the indoor relative humidity, you increase the “apparent temperature” by approx 1ºF.  For every 1ºF that you reduce your thermostat setting, you save approx 5% on your energy consumption.

Consumers who have central humidifiers can save 20% to 30% more on their heating costs on the coldest days and nights of the winter.  You will also be healthier and more comfortable.

You should consider getting a central humidifier if you have:

·        Wooden Floors

·        Wood, leather or laminated furniture or countertops

·        A piano or other wooden instruments

·        Tapestries or expensive rugs

·        Sinus problems

·        High heating bills

·        Comfort Complaints

·        Expensive electronics

How Do Central Furnace Humidifiers Work:

Furnace humidifiers work like old-fashioned room humidifiers: They put moisture into the air, making harsh, dry air easier to breathe. However, Furnace humidifiers have a number of benefits over console or standalone humidifiers. These humidifiers are usually attached to a water source so that they do not constantly need refilling. A standalone or console humidifier will only humidify the room it is located in, while a furnace humidifier will humidify all the areas heated by the furnace.  And whole-house humidifiers use water mists instead of hot steam, which keeps the entire house at the desired humidity level. A humidifier uses from 1.5 to 12 gallons of water per day — just enough to raise the humidity to the desired level, but not enough to make a difference on the water bill. And because a humidifier is installed in the ductwork, there is no need to carry one from room to room.
